According to Nigeria police, the two Americans and two Canadians who were kidnapped in Nigeria on Wednesday have now been released and are in good condition. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping. Unfortunately, two policemen who were escorting the foreign nationals from Kaduna to Abuja lost their lives during a gun battle with the kidnappers.
Kidnapping, usually for ransom, is common in parts of Nigeria. Meanwhile, in this case, Mukhtar Aliyu, a spokesman for Kaduna state police, has said that the Americans and Canadians were freed on Friday and that no ransom was paid. According to him, “It was the efforts of the police, through the directive of the inspector general of police, that yielded their release last night.”
