Theresa May’s offer of a state visit to President Donald Trump was greeted with the threat of mass protests by opponents. Infact hundreds of thousands of people had signed a petition against the proposed visit. Trump’s visit will now take place without being regarded as a full state visit. Unlike his predecessor, Barack Obama, it means that Donald Trump can not be a guest of the Queen.
A state visit for President Trump was also opposed by London mayor Sadiq Khan, who said he was “not sure it is appropriate for our government to roll out the red carpet” for Mr Trump.
