Twelve vehicles carrying insurgents and heavy weaponry reportedly drove into the school campus, opened fire and let off explosives. Students and teachers then fled into the surrounding bush to ensure the safety of their lives.

Abdullahi Bego, a spokesman for Yobe state’s governor said that the Nigerian military has rescued 76 of the abducted girls after engaging in a gun battle with the Islamist group.
