The threat posed by Deepfake videos

What is Deepfake? The definition of the word “deepfake” may not be found in the dictionary. It is a super photoshop synthesis technique which is used to combine and superimpose existing images and videos onto other images or videos, making them look real. (image photoshop and video photosho). It originated from an anonymous Reddit user who posted videos of celebrities making love in 2017 under the pseudonym “Deepfakes” The celebrities featured in the fake videos include Emma Watson, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson as well as Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot who was reportedly doing it with her step-brother.

In the United Kingdom, producers of deepfake material can be prosecuted for harassment but there are calls to make Deepfake a specific crime. Experts have been investigating and refining the deep learning techniques behind such Deepfake videos. Beyond just face swapping, researchers have shown how to digitally mimic both the appearance and voice of individuals in order to create the equivalent of digital puppets. The threat is real enough that the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has funded a Media Forensics project aimed at finding ways to automatically screen for Deepfake videos and similarly deceptive examples of digital media.
