The Ugandan academic, Stella Nyanzi, has been charged for referring to President Yoweri Museveni as “a pair of buttocks” in her Facebook post. The Facebook comment allegedly contravened the 2011 Computer Misuse Act which is punishable in Uganda. Stella is also accused of engaging in offensive communication and cyber harassment, which increases her punishment if found guilty.

She has been summoned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning. As she tried to board a plane to a conference in Amsterdam on 19 March, 2017, she was told at the airport that she had been subjected to a travel ban and she could not travel out of the country.

Furthermore, Nyanzi was suspended from her job as a research fellow at Makerere University on 31 March, 2017. On 7 April, she was reportedly arrested, held in police custody over the weekend, before being officially charged. Uganda is known for it’s hard laws.
