According to U.S. police, Nicole Marie Poole Franklin,42, was charged with attempted murder after she told the police that she intentionally struck a 14-year-old girl with her car in Clive, Iowa because she thought the teenager was a Mexican.
Chief Venema said the girl’s family requested privacy. Therefore, the police did not reveal her identity. According to NewYorkTimes, Mayor Scott Cirksena of Clive said in a statement “We are grateful that the victim is safe and recovering with her family.” “We recognize this hate, we reject it and we will overcome it.”
Joe Henry, president of Council 307 for the Hispanic civil rights group in Des Moines said: “Clearly this is a hate crime.’’ He added that: “When hate is promoted by the president of our country, it is going to show itself in the weakest elements of society and Latinos have been targeted,” Mr. Henry said. “We had to deal with this ever since he was a candidate for president and it has just gotten worse over time.”
According to investigators with Des Moines Police Department, it was later revealed that Nicole Poole was also responsible for another hit and run in which she attempted to eliminate a 12-year-old black boy. She now faces up to 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of a 12-year-old black boy and a 14-year-old Latino girl.
