The topic of discussion was expected to include the ongoing concerns about the probe into Russian meddling in the U.S. 2016 election, which has ultimately led to Trump firing the FBI director, James Comey. Lavrov was allowed to meet directly with President Trump instead of meeting with the Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, alone because according to the White House, the U.S. has to deal directly with countries of direct interest despite disagreements.
